June 2007 GIS and CAD News

We are changing our format again. From this point forward we will attempt to address all of the markets we serve in a single publication. This cuts down the number of e-mails we are sending, thus reducing what some may consider Spam. These newsletters are NOT Spam and in many cases it is the only way we have of keeping everyone informed of important dates such as software retirements and price increases.

The newsletters will be broken into five sections. These sections are:

General This section will have information that crosses all disciplines. Here you will find things like special computer pricing, information on network security services, document management solutions and announcements about Autodesk Retirement and Subscription Programs.

AEC This section will have information for Architects, Civil Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Surveyors, Building Contractors and Highway Construction

GIS This section will have information for GIS Specialists, Land Planners, Developers, Emergency Management and Response and most anyone making maps in both the government and private sectors

Manufacturing This section will have information for Mechanical, Chemical and Electrical Engineers and Draftspersons

Training This section will contain our training schedules and information on training across all disciplines

**Please let us know if you wish to be removed from our e-mail list.

Google Earth Extension Now Available for AutoCAD 2008-Based Products

The Google Earth" Extension for AutoCAD® 2008, AutoCAD® Architectural 2008, and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2008 software applications is now available for beta testing on the Autodesk Labs website.

This is a public beta (no non-disclosure agreement is required) and we would appreciate your customers valuable feedback while they explore this new application.

This publishing tool is designed to specifically meet the needs of architects, designers, and engineers using Autodesk products. With the easy-to-use, wizard-driven interface, users can publish their 3D models directly from AutoCAD into Google Earth.

From the planning process all the way through to public approval, everyone involved in a project can now view and navigate it in the context of the rich, interactive Google Earth environment. Other benefits allow you to:

  • Deliver high-impact presentations at planning board meetings or public hearings
  • Streamline the preliminary project planning process
  • Share conceptual plans with clients as they develop
  • Connect everyone involved in a project from the planning stage through to public approval

This is way cool stuff!!

Manufacturing

June 29 th

This is the drop-dead date to take advantage of special savings on Solid Edge. We have been all over the state showing why Solid Edge is better than Inventor and Solid Works. Better technology, easier to use, best 2D to 3D transition, total life cycle management, and backed by a company that cares whether you succeed or not.

Solid Edge Promotion

FREE Solid Edge 2D software

Could free 2D software really be any good? Why would a company give away free software? Let us answer these questions. The 2D software is good and you will find it does things that AutoCAD cannot. It will read in your AutoCAD and Microstation data. It is not the right fit for everyone but it is perfect for folks who do mechanical design. Before you spend $899.00 for AutoCAD LT you should give this a look!

The reason Seimens/UGS is giving it away is to get exposure. They want you to realize that if the free 2D stuff is this good then their 3D tools must be super. Your organization might only need one or two seats of 3D and everyone else could use free 2D software. The cost of ownership goes down especially if you take advantage of the existing Solid Edge Price Promotion. To get your free software call Rex at 304-395-0697

The Solid Edge Viewer is easy to download and install, and will allow you to view Solid Edge assembly, part, sheet metal and draft files, as well as DXF and AutoCAD DWG files. Download at https://www.ugs.com/forms/solidEdgeViewer.shtml

FREE solution for faster and more effective electronic design reviews

XpresReview allows a combination of 2D and 3D data (including PMI) and other documents to be packaged into a single file for more effective communication

XpresReview is an electronic design review solution that allows you to easily share multiple documents in a collaborative environment. Supported by NX and Solid Edge, XpresReview easily combines 3D models and other associated documents into a single package, so participants in your review process have all the information they need to communicate effectively.

XpresReview takes advantage of UGS' Packaged Collaboration Files, an innovative and popular concept that allows documents from different sources to be packaged into a single file.

Package files, created using NX, Solid Edge or Insight Connect, can contain a broad range of documents, including:

  • 3D models, including Product Manufacturing Information (PMI)
  • 2D drawings
  • Microsoft Office documents (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Adobe PDFs
  • Image Files (e.g. TIF, JPG, BMP)
  • AVI Movie Files (e.g. AVI, MPEG, WMV)

Recipients of the package can use XpresReview to quickly and easily interrogate its contents. XpresReview includes intuitive tools for:

  • Viewing - Navigate 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Measurements - Check dimensions for 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Mark up - Use highlights to draw attention to specific areas and add text comments
  • Section Views - Create interactive clipping planes to view the interior of 3D models
